Windows 10 and Printer
Problem:
Elderly lady in Broadview neighborhood of Seattle was beside herself with frustration getting Windows 10 to work with her printer.
Solution:
Found several user errors and bad connection to printer. Corrected connection, obtained correct drivers, provided instructions for future printing.
Network Confusion Unraveled
Problem:
House in Woodway was using older router that was also supplying WiFi using WEP for security. WEP is now insecure and should be replaced with WPA.
Occupants ordered a TP-Link router to replace the older router to provide WPA.
The new router could not easily be converted into an access point. When used as a router, the computers were not able to connect to the Sonos sound system.
Solution:
Recommendation was to replace the old router (working as an access point) with a real dual-band access point (not router). The dual-band ability would provide more device capacity and allow the computers to connect to the Sonos sound system.

Amazon Echo as Gift to Person without smartphone
Problem
Seattle daughter wanted to give her elderly mother 300 miles away in Oregon an Amazon Echo as Christmas present. Mother does not have a smartphone (or tablet) or an Amazon account. Mother does have Internet and WiFi in her house.
Solution
Echo was purchased by daughter at local store to insure no affiliation with an Amazon account. Echo was then configured to work with daughter’s Amazon account and the mother’s WiFi credentials and mother’s location (for location-based Echo services, such as weather). A special radio station on Pandora was set up on the daughter’s account to stream mother’s favorite music.
Daughter created a simple cheat sheet for the mother.
Once working in the temporary setup, unit was boxed up with cheat sheet and shipped to mother. Mother opened the present, plugged the Echo in, waited for it to connect to the home WiFi, and within two minutes with the cheat sheet was able to use the Amazon Echo.
Very delighted mother!
