Synology NAS install for remote backup
Problem:
Customer wanted personal backup outside the house. Customer had access to a non-home site with power and Internet for the Synology NAS (network attached storage). Customer wanted Synology assembled, configured, connected, and tested.
Solution:
Assembled the Synology NAS with red Western Digital drives (all purchased by the customer). Configured the NAS and set up port forwarding in the router and tested through a WAN (Internet, not LAN) connection. Added dynamic dns to the NAS using DYN.com.
Comcast and Netgear R6220 and Roku
Problem:
Seattle resident on Alki Ave SW was having problems getting Netgear R6220 router to work with Comcast. This in turn prevented computers, smart phones, and Roku from connecting to Internet.
Solution:
Connected to the Netgear R6220 router, installed updated firmware, and reconfigured wireless configurations with new SSID and passwords. Then got all devices connected to Internet. As a benefit to the customer, added free channels into the Roku that provide access to International news streams not available on Comcast TV.

Frontier DSL Modem Upgrade for Increased Security
Problem:
Everett home owner wanted better WiFi security from his Frontier DSL modem, which also worked as a WiFi router. The original equipment only supported WEB encryption.
Solution:
Home owner’s replacement DSL modem had been in a box for two years. Upon trying to activate it, it failed. A different brand and model (Netgear DM200) was located at a store, purchased, and put into service. A separate WiFi router was then connected to the modem with new SSID and password. All wireless devices were then connected to the new wireless router with WPA encryption.
Vexing Router Set Up With Comcast
Problem:
Queen Anne resident could not get new Netgear router to work with Comcast modem.
Solution:
After a variety of tests to isolate the problem, it was determined the Netgear router simply didn’t play nice with the Comcast modem or was defective. A different brand of dual-band router was put in place. This different brand router did work and passed subsequent tests to regain connection with the Comcast modem when the router lost power.
Additionally, optimized connection for the Roku media player and insured the WiFi printer was connected and working.
